Piclo, the leading independent marketplace for flexibility services, has been chosen to deliver Italy’s first local flexibility market by E-Distribuzione, part of ENEL Global Group. Piclo Flex will provide the end-to-end solution to acquire and dispatch flexibility services to solve local constraint issues on E-Distribuzione’s networks, which is the largest Distribution System Operator (DSO) in Italy.
Companies with assets such as electric vehicles or battery storage systems that are interested in earning additional revenue by providing short and medium-term grid services are invited to register on Piclo Flex.
Local flexibility services offer cost-effective solutions to drive decarbonisation, optimise network management and increase resilience. DSOs across Europe are establishing new local markets to acquire services for congestion management and voltage regulation in response to the EU’s Clean Energy Package. E-Distribuzione’s Project EDGE (Energy from Distributed Resources for the Management of the E-Distribuzione Network) aims to test and establish the most appropriate solution for the procurement of local ancillary services and the related remuneration in Italy. The project will initially cover areas in four provinces between North and South of Italy
James Johnston, CEO and co-founder of Piclo said:
“We are incredibly excited to launch this new market alongside E-Distribuzione, which is setting a new, leading standard for what can be achieved through DSO flexibility markets. This unparalleled development across Europe marks a new era for these markets including short-term flexibility services, greater integrations and end-to-end automation and ultimately improved network decarbonisation and resilience. We can’t wait to get going.”
E-Distribuzione joins leading System Operators adopting Piclo Flex as the independent marketplace for local flexibility markets. In the UK, Distribution System Operators (UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks, Electricity North West and Northern Powergrid); and the Transmission System Operator (TSO) (The ESO); in Ireland (ESB Networks); in Portugal ( E-REDES), in Lithuania ( Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius AB (ESO)), and in the United States in New York State (National Grid).

Piclo’s mission is to decarbonise the grid. We develop software solutions that make our energy networks smarter, flexible and more sustainable. Piclo Max, our market access platform, enables flex sellers (such as EV and battery owners) to access all electricity markets from one place. Piclo Flex, our flexibility services marketplace, enables flex buyers (system operators) to source flexible electricity from flex sellers during times of high demand or low supply.
To date, Piclo has over 350,000 registered flexible assets representing 26+ GW of registered flex capacity, with flexibility contracts awarded totalling £75m and 3+ GW of flexible capacity procured.
Piclo currently operates in six global markets: in the UK, supporting all six Distribution System Operators (UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks, Electricity North West, Northern Powergrid, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and National Grid Electricity Distribution); and the independent System Operator (NESO); in Ireland (ESB Networks), Italy (E-Distribuzione), Portugal (E-REDES)); in Australia (CitiPower, Powercor); and in the United States in New York State (National Grid) and Connecticut (United Illuminating). Aside from its leading position in the UK, Piclo has a growing presence in Europe, USA and the Asia-Pacific.
